February 2024 Update by Jeri' Kanally

Harrington's 1904 Opera House has been recently blessed with a dream come true and a spectacular new vision!

The Grand Old Lady of Opera has extended her graceful hand across the street to her old friends. She's uplifted and inspired her slumbering neighbors with plans for a spectacular revival!  Her invitation is for the adjoining 1902 and 1906 buildings, located at 16 and 18, S 3rd St, on the NE corner of W Willis and S 3rd.

The devoted and visionary members of the Harrington Opera House Society have done a wonderful job of resurrecting and maintaining the Opera House as a valuable and inviting destination. Their revival of the neighboring buildings will be a fantastic addition to Harrington's downtown, a very special place for locals and out of towners to experience the beauty and history of Harrington, as well as creative arts and cultural activities.

The adjoining buildings will be carefully remodeled to include a well-appointed, dynamic, museum space where we can discover and admire Harrington's very rich and impressive history. There are also very exciting plans for learning areas within the buildings. A wide variety of skilled artisans and talented craftsmen will demonstrate and teach their skills to us. These artistic opportunities will extend to the arts communities throughout our region, drawing in more visitors while enriching our residents with more cultural arts learning opportunities. How exciting!

Learning about our pioneer's grit, determination, creativity and ingenuity will be a natural bridge between our past and learning about today's many arts, handcrafting, building, farming, gardening and homemaking skills. Old school vibes with a fresh new twist!

When I toured the run-down buildings I could envision their potential. A grand entrance, restored arched windows, original wood floors…leading to the well designed and beautifully dressed museum area. I imagined all the sights and sounds of a warm and inviting building, people popping in and out, friendly hellos, handshakes and hugs…long conversations. A young couple perusing the museum with their children, showing them the history of their great grandparents, a glint in their eyes and gratitude in their hearts. Learning areas buzzing with activities. Children beaming with pride in their artistic creations. Women gathered around a big quilting table, chattering happily, sewing machine's buzzing. A potter with clay in hand at his spinning potter's wheel, students in awe of how he makes it look so easy. I can hear an elderly local man sharing his family’s history as folks gather around him, eagerly listening to his tall tales, funny stories and times of hardships and happiness. Such lovely possibilities!

Harrington's Museum and Cultural Arts Center is sure to make its own history with many wonderful opportunities for us to gather, share, learn and grow together. Let's rally around the HOH Society's vision, with enthusiasm, encouragement and our support. You're invited to share your ideas, inspirations and talents as they proceed with this very exciting adventure!
